Beginner's Guide to Trail Running in Victoria

Victoria has some of Australia's best trail running terrain, from coastal tracks to alpine ridgelines. If you're just starting out, here's everything you need to know.

Start Close to Home

The You Yangs, Dandenong Ranges, and Brisbane Ranges are all within an hour of Melbourne and offer excellent beginner trails. Stick to marked paths and start with distances you're comfortable with on road.

Essential Gear

You don't need to spend a fortune to start. The basics:

  • **Trail shoes** with grip — your most important investment
  • **Hydration vest** for runs over 60 minutes
  • **Navigation** — download AllTrails or Wikiloc before you go
  • **Sun protection** — hat, sunscreen, arm sleeves in summer
  • Trail Etiquette

  • Yield to uphill runners
  • Leave no trace — pack out what you pack in
  • Let faster runners pass
  • Your First Race

Look for events with a 10-15km option. The You Yangs Trail Run and various Parkrun trail events are great starting points.
